College of Education Hosting Reading Clinic This Summer

The Saginaw Valley State University College of Education will be hosting a Summer Reading Clinic Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from July 7-30. Students entering kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as those learning the English language, will have an opportunity for focused tutoring sessions by certified teachers who hold master’s degrees in reading or are certified Reading Recovery teachers.

Students in the clinic will be tutored in one-on-one, one-on-two, or small group instruction for 50 minutes three times a week. All tutoring is directed by SVSU faculty.

Additionally, the students will be assessed on their abilities before and after the program, giving parents a chance to see and understand the specific areas of need – and progress. Each participant must receive a pre-assessment prior to enrolling in the clinic. Sessions will be held Wednesday, May 20 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday, June 17 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Research shows that reading serves as the major foundational skill for all school-based learning. According to the Michigan Department of Education, 90 to 95 percent of struggling readers can show great improvement - in skills, strategies, and levels - through focused support groups similar to the ones the Clinic will provide.
